Know the Signs: What To Do If Someone Is Having a Stroke
General, Healthy Living, Leg / Vein HealthToday is World Stroke Day, aimed at raising awareness and reminding people to learn stroke warning signs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 795,000 strokes occur annually in the United States, making stroke a leading cause of death and disability.
The ability to recognize stroke symptoms early can determine whether a person recovers fully or experiences permanent damage. The American Stroke Association teaches people to remember stroke symptoms through the F.A.S.T. acronym, which includes three main warning signs.
F — face drooping: Ask the person to smile. Does one side droop?
A — arm weakness: Ask them to lift their arms to check for weakness. Does one drift downward?
S — speech difficulty: Check for slurred or difficult-to-understand speech.
T — time to call 911: Call 911 immediately if you notice any of these warning signs.
Quick action is key. The first few hours after stroke symptoms appear are vital for effective treatment. Contact 911 immediately if you suspect someone is having a stroke.
Your daily self-care activities not only support overall wellness but also help reduce your risk of stroke. Lifestyle choices such as staying physically active, eating a balanced diet, and monitoring your blood pressure strengthen your heart and blood vessels, lowering your chances of experiencing a stroke. Small steps add up to a stronger heart, healthier veins and peace of mind.
