The Connection Between Healthy Skin and Healthy Veins

General, Healthy Living, Leg / Vein Health

November is National Healthy Skin Month, and it’s a good time to take a moment to consider and analyze what our skin is saying about our health, especially our circulation. Our skin can provide clues about overall health because the skin is supplied with many blood vessels, and good circulation is important to keep it healthy and intact. When blood moves freely throughout the body, it helps deliver oxygen and nutrients that keep skin soft, hydrated and glowing.

As cooler weather settles in, it’s easy to overlook small habits that can affect both skin and vein health. The combination of dry indoor air, warm layers and less outdoor activity can lead to tired legs, swelling or itchy skin. This month, take a few extra steps to care for yourself, starting with your skin.

  • Stay active. Regular walks, stretches and light exercise help boost circulation and energy.
  • Moisturize and protect. Apply lotion daily to prevent dryness and improve comfort.
  • Wear compression stockings. If you experience leg heaviness or swelling, these can make a big difference in how your legs feel.
  • Avoid smoking. Even light smoking can slow blood flow and impact your skin’s appearance.

At the MercyOne Iowa Heart Vein Center, we believe healthy veins and skin go hand in hand and work together. This November, focus on your skin health because taking time for self-care now can help you feel better all season long. If you’ve noticed persistent leg discomfort, swelling or skin changes, our team is here to help with screenings and treatment options created to keep you moving and healthy.
