Tips for a Safe RAGBRAI

Fitness, General, Healthy Living

One of Iowa’s biggest traditions is set to commence later this month as riders from all over the state, country and globe take part in RAGBRAI. The eight-day event features music, food and large gatherings of people to celebrate the camaraderie RAGBRAI instills in the communities it travels through.

The ride now limits participation to 8,500 bicyclists to maintain a sense of control and ensure fewer injuries. While this is a great step in increasing rider safety, individuals also play a huge role in keeping themselves and others free from injury. Practice these tips to stay safe during RAGBRAI.

Wear proper gear.

One of the top ways to keep yourself safe on your bike is by wearing proper gear. A helmet is a must, so make sure it fits properly over your head. Wear bright-colored clothing to make yourself more visible. If you plan to start your ride early or if you go into the evening, be sure to have a headlight and taillight on your bike for better visibility. Additionally, be sure you’re riding the bike that fits you best. If you still need one, read our blog post for assistance on choosing the best bike for you.

Stay hydrated.

While most of the evenings after riding all day are spent celebrating with alcoholic beverages, it’s important to stay hydrated with water as well. Be sure to drink water throughout your ride, even when you’re not thirsty.

Avoid distractions.

Riding from town to town is no simple or fast task, so we understand you still want to communicate with the outside world. If you need to make a call, send a text or share an update on social media, pull over to a safe area to do so. Being distracted can lead to crashes, especially when portions of the ride may be on loose gravel.

Use hand signals.

While you’re typically riding in a large pack during RAGBRAI, it’s important to use hand signals to let those around you know which way you’re turning. If making a left turn, extend your left arm. If going right, bend your elbow 90 degrees with your hand pointing upward. When stopping, bend your elbow 90 degrees with your hand pointing downward. Practice normal driving laws when on the road. If you see a yield sign, be sure to obey it.
