What To Expect at Your First Vein Consultation

General, Healthy Living, Leg / Vein Health

If you have been noticing changes in your legs, such as visible veins, swelling that builds throughout the day, aching after long periods of standing or a general heaviness that was not there before, a vein consultation is a good place to start. At MercyOne Iowa Heart Vein Center, our consultations are designed to give you real answers, not just a general assessment. Here is what to expect from the moment you walk in.

Before your appointment
No special preparation is required. There are no dietary restrictions, and you do not need to adjust your medications beforehand. When you arrive, you will complete a short health history form that helps our team understand your symptoms, lifestyle and relevant family history. We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your legs.

During the consultation
Your provider will begin with a visual examination of your legs, looking for signs of varicose veins, spider veins, skin changes and other indicators of venous disease.

From there, they may use an ultrasound device to evaluate blood flow through the deeper veins in your legs. This is completely painless and noninvasive. The ultrasound helps our team assess whether the one-way valves inside your veins are functioning properly. When those valves are damaged or weakened, blood can flow backward and pool rather than return efficiently to the heart. This can contribute to heaviness, swelling and visible veins, which are symptoms many of our patients describe.

The consultation itself is not a procedure. Nothing is injected or removed. It is a thorough evaluation to understand what is happening and whether further care would be appropriate.

After the consultation
Once the consultation is complete, your provider will sit down with you and review the findings. If venous disease is identified, you will receive a straightforward explanation of what was found and what treatments are available, including what each involves, what recovery looks like and what results to expect.

Our treatment options include endovenous vein therapy, ambulatory phlebectomy and sclerotherapy. All are minimally invasive and performed right in our office. Endovenous vein therapy and ambulatory phlebectomy are performed under local anesthesia and typically involve minimal discomfort without requiring stitches. Sclerotherapy uses a targeted injection to close off smaller veins, causing them to gradually fade. No anesthesia is required. If no significant issues are found, you will leave with peace of mind and personalized recommendations for maintaining healthy legs.
